Obama says military action against Iran not ideal

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said on Monday that Iran having a nuclear weapon would be a “real problem” but he did not think military action by Israel or the United States was the “ideal way” to solve the crisis.

The United Nations Security Council, along with the United States and the European Union, have imposed tougher sanctions on Iran, which has defied international calls for it to halt uranium enrichment.
Iran says it needs the enriched uranium for the peaceful generation of electricity, but the United States and its allies, including Israel, fear Tehran's nuclear program is a cover to build an atomic bomb.

China plans 1-gigawatt N-power plant in Pakistan

BEIJING, Sept 20: China’s main nuclear energy corporation is in talks to build a 1-gigawatt atomic power plant in Pakistan, an executive said on Monday.

China has already helped Pakistan build its main nuclear power facility at Chashma in Punjab, where one reactor is running and another is nearing completion; and it has contracts to build two more there.
Qiu Jiangang, vice president of the China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC), told a meeting in Beijing that the company was already looking beyond those deals to an even bigger plant.

KABUL, Afghanistan — A helicopter carrying international troops crashed Tuesday, killing nine service members in southern Afghanistan where troops are ramping up pressure on Taliban insurgents.
It was the deadliest chopper crash in years in the country where they are heavily used for military troops spread over mountainous terrain with few roads.
One other coalition service member, an Afghan National Army soldier and a U.S. civilian were injured.

China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) is in discussions to build a 1-gigawatt scale nuclear power plant in Pakistan, after having built two there and signed agreements for two other smaller ones, a CNNC executive said on Monday. "After the successful, safe operation of the first 300- megawatt reactor in Chashma...the second reactor is now under testing and is expected to start formal operations by the end of this year," said Qiu Jiangang, vice president of CNNC. Qiu said the two countries have signed contracts to build the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors of similar size. Qiu made the remarks at a ceremony in Beijing. China's other leading nuclear power firm, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp, is launching commercial operations for a new 1-GW nuclear reactor in southern Guangdong province

KABUL (Agencies) – Afghans braved deadly Taliban attacks to vote for a new parliament Saturday, as officials said that the violence could keep the turnout at about 40 per cent, slightly up on last year’s presidential poll, but widely reported voting fraud threatened to undermine the result and the government’s credibility.
Complaints of irregularities emerged, following UN and US warnings that security and fraud were concerns in the second parliamentary vote since the 2001 US-led invasion ousted the Taliban.

What Are Human Rights?

ICC chief vows to guard game after meeting Butt

NEW DELHI (AFP) – The president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday vowed to maintain the “sanctity” of the game after meeting Pakistan’s cricket chief over the spot-fixing betting scandal.
Sharad Pawar held talks at his home in New Delhi with Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt to discuss allegations that Pakistan players were paid to bowl deliberate no-balls during a match in England last month.
“We will never tolerate any nonsense or corruption in the game of cricket. We want to maintain the sanctity of cricket,” Pawar, who is also India’s agriculture minister, told reporters after the 90-minute talks.
Since the allegations were made, the ICC has been under fierce attack from critics who say it has failed to tackle corruption and illegal gambling in the sport.
Pakistan players Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt have all written to the ICC saying they will defend themselves over disciplinary action brought against them over the claims, their lawyers confirmed this week.
Ijaz Butt said they would remain suspended until a probe by British police was completed.
“The matter is under investigation. Until that investigation is completed, we cannot comment on it,” he said. “The ICC has suspended the players. Unless the suspension is removed, they cannot play.”
Pakistan’s tour of England has been overshadowed by newspaper allegations of a betting scam involving no-balls being deliberately bowled in the fourth Test at Lord’s.

Dr Imran Farooq, one of the founding members and a senior leader of MQM, was stabbed to death in London on Thursday, reported a private TV channel. Farooq was a former convener of the party.
Quoting sources, the media outlets said that unknown veiled assailants stabbed Farooq several times in the Mill Hill area of the British capital while he was on his way to the home. He was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
